While the general availability is still a few weeks out, you can access it now via the Office Insider program for Mac. To use Skype for Business (Lync) for Mac 2011 you need to download and install the client program and then manually configure the settings. Download and all the instructions can be found in the Office 365 web portal, on the Software page.

Microsoft is retiring Skype for Business July 31, 2021. Its replacement is Microsoft Teams.

Office 2016 includes Skype for Business, so if you have Office 2016 installed, you probably already have Skype.

We strongly recommend that users contact their local technical support providers before installing Skype. Local TSPs are best positioned to know how Skype should be installed and configured in your environment.

If you are determined to self-install, you can download the stand-alone installer through Outlook on the web.

  1. At the right end of the red menu bar, click the icon of your image or initials.
  2. Click My account.
  3. Click Apps & Devices.
  4. Under Skype for Business, click Install Skype.

Presence

Presence is a combination of availability and willingness to meet. Its use is optional. In some applications it updates automatically based on events in your calendar, but with Skype for Mac, you need to update it manually.

Click your image (or the generic human icon) at the top of the left column of the Skype window, then use the dropdown list just below your name to set your status manually.

Select to return to the default state, where Skype sets your status automatically based on your calendar and Skype activity.

Status Message

You can also set a personal status message that will appear with your entry on the Contact Lists of other people.

Click your image (or the generic human icon) at the top of the left column of the Skype window. Under your name and presence indicator (Available, Busy, etc.) you'll either see your current status or (if you have not set a status message). Click here to enter a new status message. Press on your keyboard or click anywhere else to activate the new message. This note will show just under your name in the Contact lists of other people. (See Myron Florin in the image above for an example.)
